The Three-Variable Carry Model: Altitude, Temperature, and Humidity Together
A fitting built around only one of these variables is only ever a third of the picture.
A lot of fitting studios talk about "adjusting for elevation" as if it's the whole story. It's not. Elevation is the easiest variable to point to because it's fixed and printed on a map, but temperature and humidity move the needle just as much — sometimes more — and they change from one round to the next, not just from one course to the next.
Variable One: Elevation
Higher elevation means fewer air molecules pressing down on the atmosphere below, so air density drops in a predictable, roughly linear way as you climb. This is the variable most golfers already understand intuitively — everyone's heard that a ball flies farther in Denver.
Variable Two: Temperature
Warmer air expands and becomes less dense, even at a fixed elevation. A 40-degree swing from a cool March morning to a hot August afternoon can shift effective density altitude by well over a thousand feet — without you leaving your home course.
Variable Three: Humidity
This is the one golfers most often get backwards. Humid air is actually less dense than dry air, because water vapor molecules are lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen they replace. A muggy Texas afternoon carries the ball slightly farther than a bone-dry one at the same temperature, all else equal — a small effect on its own, but one that compounds with heat during a North Texas summer.
Putting the Three Together
None of these variables act alone on a real golf course. A cold, dry morning combines two distance-reducing effects at once; a hot, humid afternoon combines two distance-adding effects. Add a higher-elevation golf trip on top of either, and the swings get large enough to genuinely change which club you should be hitting into a green.
