Why a 100-Degree Frisco Afternoon Plays Shorter Than You'd Think

Heat thins the air and should add yards. So why does a scorching August round sometimes feel like it's playing long instead?

Every summer we hear a version of the same complaint from clients: "It's 102 degrees, the ball should be flying forever, but I'm coming up short on my approach shots." The physics of heat and density altitude say they should be right — hot air is thinner air, and thinner air means less drag on the ball. So what's actually going on?

The Heat Effect Is Real, But Small Per Degree

Temperature genuinely does reduce air density and add carry, but the effect is gradual. Going from a 70-degree morning to a 100-degree afternoon adds real distance — typically in the range of a few extra yards on a mid-iron — but it's not the dramatic swing golfers sometimes expect from such a big temperature change.

Firmer Turf Changes the Roll-Out, Not the Carry

A lot of what golfers attribute to "the ball not flying" in extreme heat is actually a turf and course-condition issue. Baked-out August fairways and firm greens change how a ball releases after landing, which can make an approach shot that carried the correct distance look like it came up short once it stops. Carry distance and total distance aren't the same measurement, and heat mostly affects the former while turf firmness affects the latter.

Afternoon Wind Is the Bigger Hidden Variable

Frisco's hottest rounds are usually also its windiest — afternoon heat builds thermal wind that a cool morning round simply doesn't have. A steady 12–15 mph headwind erases the density altitude gain from heat several times over, which is often the real reason a "should be flying far" shot doesn't carry the way the temperature alone would suggest.
