Density Altitude Explained for Golfers Who Don't Fly Planes

Pilots have used this number for decades to decide whether a runway is long enough. It turns out golfers need it too.

Ask most golfers what elevation their home course sits at and they'll shrug — and honestly, the raw number matters less than you'd think. What actually determines how far your ball flies is air density, and air density depends on three things at once: elevation, temperature, and humidity. Density altitude is the shorthand that folds all three into a single figure — the elevation at which the air would behave this way under standard conditions, even if your actual elevation never changes.

Why This Beats Elevation Alone

Frisco sits at roughly 673 feet above sea level, and that number never moves. But on a hot, humid August afternoon, the air thins out enough that it behaves like you're playing several thousand feet higher — our density altitude model puts a typical summer peak around 3,150 feet. On a cold, dry January morning, the opposite happens: the air gets denser, and density altitude can actually drop below sea level. Same course, same elevation sign on the clubhouse wall, two very different playing conditions.

The Physics in One Paragraph

Warmer air holds less oxygen per cubic foot than cooler air, and it takes up more space for the same amount of gas — so it's less dense. Humid air is actually slightly less dense than dry air too, because water vapor molecules weigh less than the nitrogen and oxygen they displace. Less dense air means less resistance on a golf ball in flight, which means more carry for the same swing. Combine hot and humid, and the effect compounds.
